A woman holds her back from pain from Sciatica.

You stand up from your desk and suddenly feel a jolt traveling from your lower back into your leg. Or maybe sitting through a movie has somehow become an endurance event. When pain, tingling, or numbness starts traveling down your leg, sciatica could be the reason. Understanding where this discomfort comes from is an important first step toward finding relief.

What Exactly Is Sciatica?

Sciatica isn't technically a condition itself. Instead, the term describes symptoms associated with irritation or compression of the sciatic nerve. This large nerve runs from the lower back through the buttocks and down each leg. Symptoms can vary considerably from person to person. Some people experience a dull, nagging ache, while others describe sharp, burning, or electric-like pain. Sciatica may also cause tingling, numbness, or weakness along the path of the nerve.

Usually, symptoms affect one side of the body. They may become more noticeable after sitting for extended periods, bending, coughing, or making certain movements.

There are several potential causes of sciatic nerve pain, including a herniated or bulging disc, spinal stenosis, degenerative changes in the spine, or other problems that place pressure on or irritate the nerve. Moreover, since different issues can produce similar symptoms, figuring out what's causing the problem matters.

How Can Chiropractic Care Help With Sciatica?

When someone comes to us with sciatica symptoms, our goal isn't simply to chase the pain around. We want to understand why it's happening in the first place. A chiropractor can evaluate the spine, movement patterns, posture, and other factors that may be contributing to the discomfort. Depending on the findings, chiropractic care for sciatica may include adjustments and other conservative techniques designed to improve joint mobility and overall function.

For some patients, addressing mechanical issues in the lower back or pelvis may help reduce irritation affecting the sciatic nerve. Chiropractors may also recommend stretches, exercises, posture changes, or everyday movement modifications to complement in-office treatment.

Think of it as looking upstream instead of continually mopping up the water downstream. Ultimately, finding the source of the problem can help guide a more individualized approach to care.

Don't Let Sciatica Run the Show

Sciatica can turn ordinary activities such as driving, working, exercising, or even relaxing on the couch into uncomfortable experiences. Persistent or worsening symptoms deserve attention, particularly if they interfere with your mobility or daily routine. Severe weakness, numbness around the groin or saddle area, or changes in bladder or bowel control require immediate medical attention.

Restoration Chiropractic works tirelessly to find potential causes of discomfort while helping our patients move and function better.
